Silk Pillowcase Momme Guide

Momme guide

Which silk pillowcase weight is right for you?

For most people, 25 momme is the right balance of weight, drape, durability and price. Choose 19 momme for a lighter feel and a lower starting price, or 30 momme for our densest, most substantial silk.

Every Fishers Finery pillowcase uses Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk, a charmeuse weave and a side-entry envelope closure with no zipper. Momme changes how much silk is in the fabric, not the quality of the fiber.

Momme explained

What does momme actually mean?

Momme (mm) measures the weight of silk. One momme equals 4.34 grams per square meter. A higher momme means more silk is woven into the same area of fabric.

For pillowcases, higher momme usually means a denser drape and greater durability, not better-quality silk. Fishers Finery uses the same Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk across 19, 25 and 30 momme.

Thread count is a cotton measure and does not apply to silk. A silk pillowcase advertised by thread count is a red flag.

Compare the weights

How much more silk do you get?

Bar length represents silk weight per square meter, to scale. Percentages compare each weight against 19 momme.

19 mommeOur lightest weight
25 mommeBalanced weight and drape
30 mommeHeaviest, densest drape

More momme means more silk, more density, more durability and a higher price. It does not mean better silk. All three weights use the same Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk in the same charmeuse weave, and all three regulate sleep temperature.

How to choose a silk pillowcase

You do not need to overcomplicate it. Focus on three things.

01

Choose your weight

25 momme suits most people. Choose 19 for a lighter feel and a lower starting price, or 30 for the densest, most durable option.

02

Look for measurable quality

Momme tells you how much silk you are getting. Fiber grade and independent certification tell you more than words like "premium" or "luxury".

03

Check the construction

Look at the weave and the closure. Hidden zippers catch hair and press against your face; an envelope closure does neither.

One thing to ignore: thread count. Thread count is a cotton measure. Silk is measured by weight, using momme.
Longevity

What makes a silk pillowcase last?

Fiber length and weave weight. Grade 6A means long, uniform mulberry silk filaments, and a 30 momme case holds 58% more silk than a 19 momme one, so it takes longer to show wear.

How you wash it matters just as much: cool water, a detergent made for delicates, a mesh bag in the machine, then 10 minutes in the dryer on an air-only or delicate low-heat cycle.

Frequently asked questions

A few more things to know

Is a higher momme silk pillowcase better?

Not automatically. Higher momme means more silk in the same square meter, so it is denser, drapes more heavily and generally takes longer to show wear. It does not mean a better grade of silk. All our weights use the same Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk.

What is the difference between momme and thread count?

Thread count measures threads per square inch and is most commonly used for cotton. Momme measures silk by weight. They are not interchangeable measurements.

Is 22 momme enough?

22 momme is a common weight in the category and can absolutely be real silk. Our 25 Momme contains roughly 14% more silk by weight than a 22 momme pillowcase and 32% more than a 19 momme one.

Is 19 momme real silk?

Yes. Momme measures weight, not fiber quality. Our 19 Momme pillowcase uses the same Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk as our 25 and 30 Momme pillowcases, simply woven at a lighter weight.

Is this real silk, or satin?

It is real silk. Satin describes a weave and can be made from polyester or other fibers. Fishers Finery pillowcases are made from 100% mulberry silk in a charmeuse weave.

Are Fishers Finery silk pillowcases certified?

Yes. Our silk pillowcases carry the Oeko-Tex Made in Green label, ID M27M35W78, issued by Hohenstein HTTI. Made in Green requires Standard 100 testing for harmful substances plus production in certified facilities. The 25 Momme HDRF pillowcase is additionally GOTS certified organic silk under Control Union certificate ITS-X10250-GOTS-00054901.

Every certificate number is listed on our seals and certifications page, and Oeko-Tex label IDs can be checked at oeko-tex.com.

Does a silk pillowcase help hair and skin?

Silk has a smooth surface that creates less friction against hair than many other fabrics. It is also less absorbent than cotton, so it draws less moisture from skin and hair. It is not a treatment for a medical or cosmetic condition.

How do I wash a silk pillowcase?

Hand wash or machine wash in cool water using a detergent made for delicate fabrics, such as Woolite, Ivory Liquid Soap or baby shampoo. Avoid harsh detergents containing bleach or brighteners. If you machine wash, use a hand wash or delicate cycle and place the pillowcase in a mesh wash bag so it does not tangle or snag.

We recommend machine drying, which helps remove wrinkles and maintain softness. Tumble dry on an air-only or delicate low-heat cycle for 10 minutes.

See our fabric care guide for more detail, including a tip on using a few drops of hair conditioner in the final rinse instead of fabric softener.

What size silk pillowcase should I buy?

Match the pillowcase to your pillow rather than your mattress size. Standard pillows take 20"×28", queen pillows take 20"×30" and king pillows take 20"×36". Our standard is 20"×28" rather than the more common 20"×26", so it fits a standard pillow a little more loosely and can double as a sham.
